About
Ian Battersby is an experienced Software & Cloud Architect working in GSK.AI at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). He previously worked at Salesforce as a Principal Engineer and Advanced Health & Care as Lead Software Architect.
Ian has a passion to improve the life and patients through technology and innovation. During his time at Advanced Heath & Care, Ian led the development of its next-generation emergency and urgent care services. The premature birth of his daughter gave his family many occasions to ring NHS 111 and experience first-hand the positive impact of technology on the life of patients.
It was during his time at Advanced Health & Care that Ian became expert in finding pathways for evolving monolith codebases into modern architectures. Having inherited a Microsoft .NET 2.0 Windows Form codebase in a world rapidly gravitating toward modern web-applications, Ian and his team developed an innovative approach that delivered an SOA 2.0 event-driven architecture with composited HTML5 front-end that could be embedded seamlessly into the legacy application. Given Ian's contribution to open-source web technologies, during this time he was invited to join the Microsoft advisory board for the Katana project helping move ASP.NET cross-platform on what ultimately became .NET Core.
Building on his expertise moving monolith codebases to modern architectures Ian joined Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Working from their London offices Ian and his team led a technical effort to find an iterative path in decoupling and decomposing core components from a large monolith application suite known as “Advertising Audiences”. In June 2018 was privileged to represent Marketing Cloud at the annual Salesforce Architecture Summit in San Francisco.
At the end of 2018 Ian had the opportunity to return to healthcare in joining GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as part of an initiative toward adopting a product-driven approach to software design and development. Ian's role in this exciting journey has been to envision and contribute to our next-generation hybrid-cloud platform that allows teams to iterate quickly with least friction and maximum trust. Following core principles of zero-trust architecture, full infrastructure automation, and secure-by-default, product teams are now able to take an idea from zero to production in sixty minutes.
